President William Samoei Ruto today launched the housing projects and market places at Kapsabet in Nandi County
President William Ruto spent Thursday on a development tour in Nandi County where he inspected major government projects, attended school celebrations, and addressed residents in Kapsabet. The visit focused on affordable housing, market infrastructure, and education development programmes being implemented in the region.
The President began his tour by inspecting the ongoing construction of the KSh365 million Kapsabet Modern Market, a project expected to boost trade in the town once completed. The facility is currently more than 35 per cent complete and is designed to host more than 1,000 traders.
Officials indicated that the modern market will provide improved working conditions for small-scale traders and expand business opportunities in the county. The government expects the facility to be completed by December as part of the national plan to upgrade trading spaces.
Ruto said modern markets are a key component of the government’s economic agenda aimed at supporting small businesses and improving livelihoods. He noted that traders across the country require safe and modern spaces to operate and grow their enterprises.
During the visit, the President also laid the foundation stone for the 1,165‑unit Chesumei Affordable Housing Project. The development is part of the national housing programme designed to increase access to decent and affordable homes.
The housing project is among several initiatives planned in Nandi County under the government’s affordable housing programme. Authorities say the plan includes the construction of thousands of housing units and several modern markets across the county.
Ruto announced that the government intends to invest about KSh15 billion in Nandi County to deliver 10,000 affordable housing units and 16 modern markets. The projects are expected to stimulate economic growth and create employment opportunities for local residents.
The President said the Affordable Housing Programme has already created jobs for more than 640,000 young people across the country. According to the government, the initiative is also reshaping urban areas through the construction of homes, markets, and hostels for university and college students.
He told residents that the government’s development agenda is focused on tangible projects that directly improve the lives of Kenyans. The President said his administration remains committed to implementing promises made during the election campaign.
Ruto also addressed a public gathering in Kapsabet town where he outlined national and local development plans. He told residents that future elections should focus on leaders’ development records rather than personality politics.
The Head of State stated that political leadership in Kenya should be evaluated based on performance and delivery of development programmes. He added that divisive politics and empty rhetoric should no longer dominate the country’s political discourse.
While in Nandi County, the President attended the centenary celebrations of Kapsabet Boys High School, one of the country’s oldest learning institutions. The school marked 100 years of existence with celebrations attended by national and regional leaders.
Ruto praised the school for its long history of academic excellence and leadership development. He noted that the institution has produced two of Kenya’s five Presidents as well as many professionals serving in various sectors.
To expand educational opportunities at the school, the government pledged to improve infrastructure at the institution. Plans include the construction of a new science complex and additional classrooms to accommodate more students.
The expansion programme will also include the construction of a 1,000‑bed capacity hostel to improve student accommodation. Authorities say the upgrades are aimed at strengthening the school’s capacity to maintain its academic performance.
The government also announced plans to hire 20 teachers who are currently employed by the school’s Board of Management. The teachers will be absorbed by the Teachers Service Commission to support learning programmes at the institution.
Earlier in the day, the President attended a thanksgiving ceremony at Kapsabet Girls High School to celebrate the school’s strong national examination results. During the visit, he inspected a new hostel under construction at the institution.
During the tour, Ruto was accompanied by several leaders from the region including Stephen Sang, Samson Cherargei, and Julius Melly.
The President also made an impromptu visit to the Kapsabet School for the Deaf after a tragic incident where a septic tank collapsed, leaving one student dead and several others injured. He offered condolences to the school community and donated KSh5 million to support the institution.
Emergency responders and county authorities worked together to rescue affected students and provide medical care to those injured. Authorities linked the collapse to heavy rains that may have weakened the concrete structure covering the septic tank.
The President concluded his tour by addressing residents and supporters in Kapsabet town, where he reiterated the government’s commitment to development programmes aimed at transforming counties across the country. Leaders present urged residents to support the ongoing projects to ensure their successful completion.
