President William Ruto has conferred Kenya’s highest national honor on former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in recognition of his outstanding global leadership and service to humanity.

In a statement shared through his official social media handles, President Ruto praised Ban Ki-moon for his more than five decades of public service and transformative leadership on the global stage.

“In his more than 50-year public career, former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has made a huge impact on global affairs and humanity,” the president stated.

He commended the former UN chief for rallying the world to confront some of the most pressing global challenges, including climate change, public health crises, and gender inequality.

“During his tenure at the UN, he mobilized the world to confront global challenges ranging from the climate crisis and global health to gender inequality,” he noted.

President Ruto hailed Ban as a unifying force and a reformer who gave voice to the voiceless and advanced shared global goals.

“We therefore celebrate His Excellency Ban Ki-moon, an extraordinary leader who built bridges, reformed the UN, gave voice to the voiceless, and fostered progress towards shared goals,” he said in his statement.

The honor, Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (C.G.H.), First Class, was bestowed on Ban Ki-moon at State House, Nairobi, underscoring Kenya’s appreciation of his global legacy. Ban Ki-moon is a prominent South Korean diplomat and statesman who served as the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 2007 to December 2016.
