Pope Leo XIV has renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan following reports of mass killings in the city of El Fasher, northern Darfur. Speaking during his Angelus address at the Vatican, the Pontiff condemned the continued violence targeting civilians and urged both warring factions to halt hostilities without delay.
The Pope decried what he described as “indiscriminate attacks on women, children, and unarmed civilians” amid the escalating conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. He appealed for the immediate opening of humanitarian corridors to enable aid agencies to deliver food, medicine, and other essential supplies to affected populations trapped by the fighting.
Pope Leo further called on the international community to act decisively and generously to support relief efforts in Sudan, emphasizing the need for global solidarity with those suffering from war and displacement.
El Fasher has witnessed heavy bombardments and widespread destruction after months of siege, leaving thousands dead and forcing tens of thousands to flee. The renewed papal appeal comes as humanitarian organizations warn of a worsening crisis and limited access to aid.
The Vatican’s statement underscores growing international concern over Sudan’s deteriorating humanitarian situation and the urgent need for peace talks to end the protracted conflict in Darfur.
