Police have arrested one suspect after uncovering a half-acre cannabis plantation concealed within a maize farm at Moi Ndabi Village in Kongoni, Nakuru County, in an intelligence-led operation targeting illegal drug cultivation.
The National Police Service (NPS) said officers from Kongoni Police Station launched the operation after receiving intelligence on suspected cultivation of cannabis in the area. During the raid, officers discovered approximately half an acre of cannabis sativa, commonly known as bhang, intercropped with maize in an apparent attempt to disguise the illegal crop.
Police said the concealment method demonstrated the lengths to which individuals involved in the illicit drug trade are going to evade detection by law enforcement agencies.
One suspect was arrested at the scene and is being held in police custody pending arraignment. Detectives have launched further investigations to establish ownership of the farm and identify any accomplices connected to the illegal cultivation.
The cannabis plants were uprooted and seized as exhibits, with investigators expected to subject them to the necessary forensic and evidential processes before the case is presented in court.
The NPS said the operation forms part of sustained intelligence-led efforts to dismantle narcotics cultivation and trafficking networks operating across the country. Police noted that such operations are aimed at disrupting the production and supply of illegal drugs before they reach the market.
Authorities reiterated that the cultivation, possession and trafficking of cannabis remain criminal offences under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, attracting severe penalties upon conviction.
Police further appealed to members of the public to continue providing information on suspected drug-related activities, saying public cooperation remains vital in combating organised crime and protecting communities from the effects of narcotics.
The suspect remains in custody awaiting arraignment as investigations continue. Police have indicated that additional arrests could follow should further evidence emerge linking other individuals to the cannabis plantation.
