PCEA Mai A Ihii Booth High School in Kikuyu, Kiambu County, has been closed indefinitely after the school's principal and the Board of Management chairperson were arrested over allegations of sexually harassing students. The closure was announced by Kikuyu Sub-County Director of Education Jeremiah Kipaiyu, who said the decision was taken to safeguard learners and maintain order at the institution following the arrests.

In a directive issued on July 14, Kipaiyu ordered that all students be released to their parents and guardians with immediate effect, noting that the absence of the school's principal had created an administrative vacuum that could compromise the safety, supervision and welfare of learners. He said the school would remain closed until further notice.

The arrests followed complaints made by students, prompting the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to launch investigations into the allegations. Detectives have since begun recording statements from students, teachers and other witnesses as they seek to establish the full circumstances surrounding the claims.

Investigators are also examining whether the school's leadership adequately handled previous complaints and complied with child protection policies and reporting procedures. School records and other relevant documents have been secured as part of the ongoing investigations.

Education officials said the welfare of learners remains the top priority, with counselling and psychosocial support being arranged for affected students as authorities continue gathering evidence.

The closure has disrupted learning for hundreds of students, with parents asked to make immediate arrangements to pick up their children. Education officials said further communication on the resumption of classes will be issued after security and administrative concerns have been addressed.

The incident has renewed concerns about child protection and safeguarding standards in learning institutions, particularly the responsibility of school management and Boards of Management to provide a safe environment for students.

The Ministry of Education is expected to work with the Teachers Service Commission and investigative agencies to determine any administrative or disciplinary action that may arise from the findings of the investigations.

Authorities have urged anyone with information related to the allegations to cooperate with investigators, while emphasising that the suspects remain subject to the due process of the law as investigations continue.

Education officials said the school will only reopen once the investigations have progressed and measures have been put in place to guarantee the safety and wellbeing of all learners.
