President William Ruto’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Eliud Owalo, has declared his intention to run for the presidency in the 2027 General Election, setting the stage for a bold political contest. The announcement was made during a public church event in Kisumu County, drawing attention due to Owalo’s current senior role in State House.
Owalo said his decision was driven by a desire to offer issue-based leadership focused on delivery, performance, and accountability. He argued that Kenya needs leaders who prioritise development outcomes over political rhetoric and personality-driven politics.
A key pillar of his message was a call for genuine multiparty democracy in the Nyanza region. Owalo maintained that political competition is essential for democracy to thrive and said the region should move away from entrenched single-party dominance.
He noted that the Constitution guarantees political freedom and choice, urging residents to evaluate leaders based on ideas and track records rather than long-standing political loyalties. His remarks were widely interpreted as a challenge to the Orange Democratic Movement’s grip on the region.
Owalo outlined a development-focused agenda for Nyanza, citing infrastructure expansion, water projects, agricultural value addition, and enhanced regional trade as priorities. He said these interventions are critical to unlocking the region’s economic potential.
The Deputy Chief of Staff also referenced his experience working with different political formations and leaders, saying it had equipped him with a national outlook and the skills needed for top leadership. He added that his current role in government has deepened his understanding of service delivery.
Owalo’s declaration is expected to reshape political conversations in Nyanza and beyond, with analysts predicting heightened debate over political pluralism, loyalty, and development as the country gradually turns its attention to the 2027 elections.
