More than 260 wheelchairs have been distributed in Nandi County through a joint initiative by Chair the Love Foundation, the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, and the county government. The programme, which ran through the week, aims to improve mobility, dignity, and inclusion for persons with disabilities identified through structured assessment and selection processes.
Governor Stephen Sang said the initiative is driven by the goal of restoring freedom and hope to beneficiaries, noting its wider impact on families and communities. He emphasized the life-changing nature of the programme, saying it has brought meaningful transformation to many households across the county.
“Provide the gift of mobility. And we love doing this because it provides freedom and hope to the wheelchair recipient, and we've seen miracles happen and lives change in such wonderful ways, but also impact families and communities.”
The county leadership said the programme is supported by a coordinated system of assessment and identification to ensure wheelchairs reach those most in need. Officials involved in the exercise highlighted that the distribution is ongoing and will continue until the end of the week.
Beneficiaries expressed emotional relief after receiving assistive devices, with parents noting the long wait for mobility support. Some described years of difficulty caring for children with severe conditions such as cerebral palsy, saying the wheelchairs significantly ease daily care and movement.
Organisers said the wheelchairs provided are of different types and high quality, designed to suit specific medical and physical needs. They added that modern manufacturing standards ensure comfort and suitability for individual users depending on their condition.
Chair the Love Foundation noted that the initiative has been running for four years and has expanded to several counties across Kenya, including Kajiado, Tharaka Nithi, Kisumu, and Uasin Gishu. The organisation credited partnerships with county governments and Baraton University for scaling up the programme nationwide.
“The last four years we have been involved in this exercise of distributing wheelchairs and we have expanded to Kajiado, we have expanded to Tharaka Nithi, we have also expanded to Kisumu, and yesterday we did distribution in Uasin Gishu. The county has been supporting this initiative and we are very appreciative to the county, but also the Chair the Love Foundation from the United States of America.”
