Opposition leaders have criticised ODM leader Oburu Odinga after he advised President William Ruto to adopt a stronger approach in decision-making, describing the remarks as falling below democratic standards and raising concerns over the protection of constitutional principles.
Oburu made the remarks during an event at State House, Nairobi, where he told President Ruto that Kenya needed firm leadership to implement major reforms and development programmes. He argued that excessive delays caused by political disagreements could slow down national progress.
The Siaya Senator’s comments sparked debate among political leaders, with critics questioning the idea of encouraging a president to exercise powers associated with dictatorship, even if described as being for the public good.
Opposition figures argued that Kenya’s democratic system is built on checks and balances, including Parliament, the Judiciary, independent institutions and public participation. They said national decisions must follow constitutional procedures rather than rely on concentrated executive authority.
Critics said Kenya’s history of political reforms was shaped by struggles against excessive presidential powers and that leaders should avoid statements that could be interpreted as supporting authoritarian tendencies.
Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) officials were among those who condemned the remarks, arguing that strong leadership should not come at the expense of accountability, transparency and citizens’ rights.
The criticism also came amid continued debate over ODM’s cooperation with President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration. Some opposition leaders have accused ODM of weakening its watchdog role by working closely with the government.
Oburu defended his position, saying his comments were about leadership courage and the ability to make difficult decisions in the interest of the country. He maintained that firm leadership does not necessarily mean ignoring democratic institutions.
The ODM leader said governments sometimes require determination to implement policies that may face resistance from different groups. He argued that development can be delayed when leaders are unable to make difficult choices.
Supporters of his remarks said effective governance requires decisive action, especially when dealing with economic challenges and national transformation programmes.
However, opponents maintained that democracy allows governments to pursue reforms through consultation, debate and accountability mechanisms rather than through unchecked authority.
The controversy has added to ongoing political discussions ahead of the 2027 General Election, with parties continuing to define their positions on governance, accountability and cooperation with the current administration.
The debate surrounding Oburu’s remarks reflects a wider national conversation on the balance between strong leadership and the need to protect democratic institutions established under Kenya’s Constitution.
