A Kenyan court has released Festus Arasa Omwamba on a Sh5 million bond in a case where he is accused of recruiting Kenyans to join the Russian military.

The suspect appeared before Principal Magistrate Gideon Kiage, who ordered that he be released on bond with strict conditions attached to secure his attendance in court.

As part of the ruling, the court directed Omwamba to deposit all his travel documents, including his passport, to prevent him from leaving the country while the case is ongoing.

Omwamba is facing charges related to human trafficking, with prosecutors alleging that he played a central role in recruiting young Kenyans under false promises of employment abroad.

According to investigators, the alleged scheme involved facilitating travel arrangements for recruits who were later deployed to Russia, where they are believed to have been drawn into military activities.

The prosecution told the court that some of the individuals who travelled through the alleged network ended up in active conflict zones linked to the ongoing war involving Russia.

Omwamba denied the charges in court, maintaining that he was not involved in any illegal recruitment or trafficking activities.

The court heard that the suspect had previously been arrested after presenting himself to authorities, before being handed over to investigators handling transnational crime.

State prosecutors had opposed his release on bond, arguing that the seriousness of the charges and the cross-border nature of the case made him a potential flight risk.

Despite the opposition, the magistrate ruled that the accused could be released under strict bail terms, citing his right to bail under Kenyan law.

The case is set to proceed to hearing, with authorities indicating that investigations are ongoing into a possible wider network involved in the recruitment of Kenyans for foreign conflicts.
