The Orange Democratic Movement has defended the removal of Edwin Sifuna as the party’s Secretary General, saying the decision was based on indiscipline and conduct that allegedly undermined unity within the party.

In submissions before the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, ODM said its leadership acted within the law and the party constitution when it resolved to remove the Nairobi Senator from the influential position.

The party argued that Sifuna had engaged in actions and statements that were inconsistent with party discipline, prompting intervention by the party’s top leadership organs.

According to ODM officials, the decision to remove him was reached during a meeting of the National Executive Committee where leaders deliberated on concerns surrounding his conduct.

The party maintained that discipline among senior officials is essential for maintaining stability and cohesion within its leadership structures.

However, Sifuna challenged the decision and moved to the tribunal seeking orders to block the implementation of the party’s resolution removing him from office.

He argues that the move was irregular and violated the party constitution as well as the laid-down disciplinary procedures.

Following the application, the tribunal issued temporary orders halting the implementation of the decision pending the hearing and determination of the dispute.

The tribunal also barred the Registrar of Political Parties from gazetting any changes to the Secretary General position until the matter is fully determined.

The leadership dispute has exposed divisions within the Orange Democratic Movement as some leaders back the disciplinary action while others call for dialogue to resolve the standoff.

The case is now set to proceed before the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal as the battle over the party’s top administrative position continues.
