The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is moving swiftly to quell internal anxieties and counter narratives suggesting the party is destined to collapse following the passing of its long-time leader, the late Raila Odinga.
Party officials have launched a concerted effort through public engagements to project an image of stability, unity, and a firm command structure securely held by loyal followers of the departed former Prime Minister.
These efforts have culminated in high-profile meetings held across the country, each serving a distinct strategic purpose. In Magarini, Kilifi County, the party leaders focused on immediate electoral goals, publicly endorsing and throwing their full weight behind Harrison Kombe, the ODM candidate vying for the local parliamentary seat in the upcoming by-election.
This move underscored the party's commitment to maintaining its political ground and achieving electoral victory even in the post-Raila era.
Simultaneously, a meeting in Kitengela was used to convey a message of long-term strategic cohesion. Officials emphasized the need for unity among the party's current top brass, directly addressing concerns about a potential power vacuum or widening internal rifts. The overall message from both platforms was that the ODM's leadership is intact and fully operational.
Further reinforcing the party’s structural discipline, the Orange Democratic Movement's acting party leader, Oburu Oginga, has decisively clarified the official communication channels.
Speaking on Sunday during an interview with a local media house, Mr. Oginga insisted that Cabinet Secretaries John Mbadi and Opiyo Wandayi do not speak on behalf of the party on national political matters.
He explained that by virtue of their governmental positions, these leaders have effectively ceded their role as authentic party voices in the current political landscape.
In contrast to the clarification on the roles of government officials, Mr. Oginga issued a strong defense of Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary-General, Edwin Sifuna, affirming him as the single, authentic voice of the party.
