Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has unveiled a seven-member legal team to defend him in the Senate impeachment proceedings, marking the latest escalation in the political battle surrounding his administration. The team will be led by prominent lawyer Elias Mutuma, who is expected to anchor the governor’s strategy as he fights to retain his seat.
The announcement comes as the Senate prepares to hear charges brought forward by the Nyamira County Assembly, which accuses the governor of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and mismanagement of public resources. The Assembly will be represented by Senior Counsel Katwa Kigen, setting the stage for a heavyweight legal contest between two seasoned legal minds.
Governor Nyaribo’s defence lineup includes lawyers Zelmer Bonuke, Ombui Ratemo, Brianalee Murithii and Erastus Orina, supported by legal aides Sylvia Njoki and Michelle Makandi. The team is expected to challenge both the substance and procedure of the impeachment, including claims that some Assembly members have disowned the votes cast in favour of his removal.
On the opposite side, the County Assembly’s legal team led by Katwa Kigen is preparing to present documents, witness statements and evidence intended to substantiate the allegations. Their case hinges on demonstrating that the governor’s conduct breached constitutional provisions and compromised governance within the county.
The Senate hearing is expected to deliver a decisive verdict for Nyaribo’s political future. If the Assembly proves its case, he could be removed from office, but a successful defence would allow him to complete his term. The coming days will determine whether the governor survives the latest challenge to his leadership.
