Netanyahu Orders Strikes On Beirut’s Southern Suburbs As Israel-Hezbollah Tensions Escalate

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday ordered the Israeli military to carry out strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, particularly the Dahieh district, a stronghold of the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. Israeli officials said the operation was launched in response to what they described as repeated ceasefire violations, including rocket and drone attacks targeting Israeli communities.
According to a joint statement from Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, the Israeli Defense Forces were instructed to strike what Israel called “terror targets” in Dahieh. Israeli authorities argued that continued attacks from Lebanon had left them with no choice but to respond militarily.
The strikes come amid a fragile ceasefire that took effect in April but has been repeatedly tested by ongoing exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah. Following Israel’s warning of impending strikes, thousands of residents fled Beirut’s southern suburbs, creating major traffic congestion as families sought safety. Images from the area showed long lines of vehicles leaving Dahieh, reflecting fears of a wider escalation in the conflict.
The latest developments follow weeks of increasing military activity. Israeli forces have intensified attacks against Hezbollah positions, while Hezbollah has continued launching projectiles into northern Israel, including areas near major population centers.
The escalation has raised concerns among international mediators who have been trying to preserve the ceasefire. Diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions have faced significant challenges as both sides continue to exchange accusations and military strikes.
Lebanese leaders have condemned the Israeli attacks, warning that strikes on Beirut risk undermining diplomatic efforts and worsening the humanitarian situation. International organizations and several governments have also expressed concern that the renewed violence could trigger a broader regional confrontation.
The conflict has already caused significant casualties and displacement across Lebanon. Large numbers of civilians have been forced from their homes since fighting intensified, placing additional pressure on humanitarian agencies and local authorities.
Analysts warn that the strikes on Dahieh mark one of the most serious escalations since the April ceasefire and could further destabilize efforts to restore calm along the Israel-Lebanon border. The situation remains highly volatile, with both Israel and Hezbollah signaling readiness to continue military operations if attacks persist.
As of Monday evening, there were no immediate reports of casualties from the latest strikes, but authorities in both Israel and Lebanon remained on high alert amid fears that the confrontation could expand into a wider conflict affecting the entire region.
