NCPWD Calls For Inclusive Affirmative Action At Devolution Conference
BY FAITH MASIGA
The National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) called for more inclusive affirmative action programmes that benefit all marginalized groups, including persons with disabilities.
The NCPWD's Executive Director Harun Hassan made the call at the just concluded Devolution Conference in Uasin Gishu County. The conference was themed "10 Years of Devolution: The Present and the Future."
Hassan noted that conversations around affirmative action programmes are often skewed in favor of women and youth, leaving behind persons with disabilities. He said that persons with disabilities are also marginalized and deserve to benefit from affirmative action programmes.
Hassan called for the full implementation of the disability medical assessment guidelines to provide accurate county disability data. This data would be used to accurately inform affirmative action efforts. He also called for the establishment of a county engagement framework to guide and evaluate disability issues in devolved units.
Many commitments were made at the conference, including the adoption of the 2023 Children's Devolution Conference's report. The report called for additional support to students with disabilities and enhanced accessibility in public buildings and transport.
