Nairobi MCAs Renew Push To Impeach Sakaja After Earlier Bids Stall

Nairobi MCAs have revived the impeachment bid against Governor Johnson Sakaja, now citing 22 grounds in their fresh ouster attempt
Members of the Nairobi County Assembly have revived efforts to impeach Johnson Sakaja, escalating political tensions at City Hall months after previous removal attempts collapsed.
A section of MCAs confirmed they are mobilising signatures to table a fresh motion seeking the ouster of the Nairobi Governor, accusing him of leadership failures and governance lapses.
The renewed push follows earlier impeachment plans that were either withdrawn or halted before reaching the voting stage in the Assembly. Those efforts reportedly faltered amid internal divisions and political interventions.
In previous attempts, MCAs cited concerns over service delivery, alleged financial mismanagement, and strained relations between the executive and the Assembly. However, the motions did not proceed to a conclusive vote.
Political heavyweights from major parties previously stepped in to calm the situation, summoning MCAs for consultations that effectively paused the impeachment drive at the time.
Sources within the Assembly indicate that the latest move is being spearheaded by a cross-section of ward representatives who argue that earlier negotiations failed to address underlying grievances.
Under Kenyan law, impeachment of a county governor begins with a motion supported by at least one-third of all MCAs, after which the Assembly debates and votes on the charges before any matter can proceed to the Senate.
Nairobi County Assembly comprises 122 MCAs, meaning a minimum threshold must be met before the motion can be formally introduced for debate.
Supporters of the governor have dismissed the fresh impeachment talk as politically motivated, insisting that the administration remains focused on service delivery and ongoing development programmes.
The renewed political storm comes at a time when the county government is implementing budgetary measures and infrastructure projects aimed at improving waste management, transport, and health services in the capital.
Analysts note that repeated impeachment threats can disrupt county operations, slow policy implementation, and deepen political rivalries within the devolved unit.
This is not the first time Johnson Sakaja has faced removal pressure since taking office, reflecting broader tensions between the executive arm and sections of the Assembly.
As of now, no formal impeachment motion has been successfully tabled in the House, but the situation remains fluid as MCAs continue consultations ahead of a possible renewed bid to remove the governor.
