Signs Media Kenya and the Nairobi County Government have partnered to deliver on-demand Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) interpretation services using the unique assistALL app.
This important workshop, which began today, May 28, at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE), is centered on "Understanding Disability, Human Rights, and Accessibility."

In a press statement by Signs Media Kenya Founder and Managing Director Luke Muleka, over 50 healthcare officers from Level 4 and 5 health facilities in Nairobi County are participating in the effort by attending a two-day disability mainstreaming workshop.
According to the Director, the assistALL app, which was primarily designed to bridge communication gaps between Deaf people and healthcare practitioners during the COVID-19 outbreak, has greatly expanded its utility.

It is now actively utilized in various other sectors, including higher education, general healthcare, the judicial system, and the banking sector, showcasing its remarkable adaptability and effectiveness in promoting inclusivity.

The MD further revealed that assistALL is creating crucial employment opportunities for sign language interpreters by enabling them to earn a consistent income and bringing them closer to their customer base, which eliminates the need for extensive travel logistics. This efficiency allows interpreters to serve more deaf people, marking an important step towards promoting the inclusion of deaf Persons by enabling their access to essential services.

For corporate entities and professionals, assistALL offers an unprecedented avenue to access a consumer segment that Mr. Muleka says has historically been overlooked in business planning.

The app operates on a convenient per-second billing platform, making KSL interpretation accessible for as little as Kes. 30. It is already operational in Busia and Mandera Counties, serving county referrals and sub-county hospitals.

The assistALL app is freely available for download on the Google Play Store, iOS, Mpesa Super APP, and as a WebAPP. To date, it boasts over 12,000 downloads, connects users with more than 500 qualified sign language interpreters, and has facilitated over 82,000 minutes of calls.
