Nairobi County Speaker Freed On Cash Bail
Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura has been freed on a Ksh.500,000 cash bail.
Speaker Mutura was summoned to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices on Thursday over alleged theft.
"I am conducting an investigation into an alleged ...stealing by a servant. I have reasons to believe that you, Benson Mutura is connected to the offense or have information that may assist in the investigations," the summons read in part.
Nairobi speaker on the other hand termed the arrest as a witch-hunt because he had declared that he will support Deputy President William Ruto's bid.
On Friday Mutura was presented before Magistrate Esther Kimilu who handed him an alternative bond of Ksh.1 million.
His lawyers pleaded with the court to release him arguing that his arrest was merely meant to embarrass him.
The case is set to be heard on May 16, 2022, with the magistrate further directing Speaker Mutura not to interfere with investigations.
