Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has assumed the chairmanship of the East African Community Heads of State Summit, succeeding Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto in the rotational leadership role of the regional bloc.
The transition was confirmed during the 25th Ordinary Summit of EAC Heads of State held in Arusha, Tanzania, where leaders of partner states convened to review progress on regional integration and policy coordination.
Ruto formally handed over the position after serving as chair of the summit since November 2024, a period during which Kenya oversaw key discussions on trade cooperation, infrastructure development and regional security issues.
Under the EAC’s rotational system, the chairmanship is held by a head of state from a partner country for roughly one year before passing to another member state leader.
As chair of the summit, Museveni will preside over meetings of the regional heads of state and guide policy discussions affecting the bloc’s political, economic and institutional agenda.
The EAC currently brings together eight partner states including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Somalia.
Museveni’s tenure as chair is expected to focus on advancing regional integration initiatives, strengthening cross-border trade and addressing security challenges affecting several parts of East Africa.
