Kenya’s Parliament has approved a motion tabled by Mwingi West MP Charles Ngusya seeking to establish a standardized reward scheme for athletes and other sportsmen representing the country in international competitions.
The proposal recommends that athletes who set new world records receive KSh 6 million, while winners of gold, silver, and bronze medals at global events be awarded KSh 4 million, KSh 3 million, and KSh 2 million respectively. This is aimed at motivating sportsmen and women to maintain Kenya’s dominance in athletics and other disciplines.
In addition to cash rewards, the motion outlines non-monetary benefits including medical cover, retirement savings, and contributory insurance schemes for athletes to safeguard their welfare beyond active competition. The plan also calls for national recognition such as diplomatic passports, ambassadorial roles, and other state honors to acknowledge the athletes’ contribution to the country’s international profile.
MP Ngusya said the structured reward system would not only inspire excellence but also ensure that sportsmen and women are adequately supported during and after their careers. The motion now awaits further steps by the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Sports and Arts to design implementation frameworks and allocate funding.
