Morocco has emerged at the center of African football headlines after securing both the hosting rights and eventual title of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following a series of dramatic developments.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed that Morocco was awarded the rights to host the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 tournament after the initial host nation failed to meet required standards.

Originally, the tournament had been granted to Guinea, but the country was stripped of hosting duties due to delays in infrastructure development and concerns over preparedness.

Following an assessment process, CAF selected Morocco, citing its modern stadiums, strong transport network, and proven ability to organize major international competitions.

The reassignment put to rest speculation that Senegal could step in as host, clarifying that Senegal was never officially awarded the tournament.

The competition proceeded in Morocco, attracting attention from across the continent as top national teams battled for supremacy in one of Africa’s most prestigious football events.

The final match saw hosts Morocco face Senegal in a tightly contested encounter that extended into extra time, with both sides demonstrating resilience and tactical discipline.

Senegal initially appeared to have clinched victory after scoring in extra time, placing them on the brink of lifting the continental title.

However, controversy erupted late in the match when a disputed decision led to protests from Senegalese players, who briefly walked off the pitch in disagreement with officiating calls.

Although the players later returned and the match concluded, the incident prompted an official review by CAF into possible breaches of tournament regulations.

After deliberations, CAF ruled that Senegal had violated competition rules by abandoning the field of play, even temporarily, during a critical stage of the match.

As a result, the governing body awarded the match to Morocco on a 3–0 forfeit, overturning the initial outcome and handing the hosts the championship.

The decision has sparked debate across the football community, with Senegal expected to challenge the ruling, while Morocco celebrates both a successful hosting campaign and a historic AFCON triumph.
