Former nominated senator Millicent Omanga has officially left the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to join the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), criticizing President William Ruto for failing to uphold gender equality in government appointments.

Omanga made the announcement in early February 2026, appearing alongside former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, now leader of DCP and the broader United Opposition coalition. The public association signals a major political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.

She confirmed plans to contest the Nairobi County Women Representative seat, citing her commitment to giving women a stronger voice in governance. Omanga narrowly lost the same seat in 2022, and she believes her new alignment will bolster her chances in the next polls.

Omanga criticized the current administration for failing to implement inclusive governance and for neglecting promises made during the 2022 campaign. She highlighted the unfulfilled pledge on achieving gender parity, noting that the two-thirds gender rule remains unmet.

The two-thirds gender rule, enshrined in Kenya’s Constitution, mandates that no more than two-thirds of members in elective or appointive bodies should be of the same gender. Despite repeated promises, the Ruto administration has yet to fully meet this requirement.

Political analysts say Omanga’s defection underscores growing discontent among UDA members and reflects wider realignments as parties position for 2027. The DCP, backed by influential opposition leaders, has begun attracting several high-profile defectors.

Supporters of Omanga view her move as a principled stand for gender equity, while critics argue it is a strategic political calculation aimed at increasing her electoral prospects.

Omanga thanked her supporters, particularly from the Mt Kenya region, for backing her political journey, signaling a broadening coalition in her bid for the upcoming elections.

Observers note that Omanga’s shift could influence voting patterns, especially among women and urban constituents dissatisfied with the pace of gender reforms.

Her defection adds pressure on UDA to address internal grievances and public perception, with the party now facing questions about loyalty, governance, and its ability to maintain support in key metropolitan areas ahead of the next general elections.
