The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially gets underway tonight with Mexico facing South Africa in the opening Group A fixture. Kickoff is set for 10:00 PM Kenya time at Mexico City Stadium.

This tournament marks a historic expansion to 48 teams and will feature 104 matches, making it the biggest World Cup edition ever staged.

Mexico enter the competition as co-hosts and will play all three of their group-stage matches on home soil, beginning with tonight’s opener in front of a packed crowd.

The opening match will be played at Mexico City Stadium, one of football’s most historic venues and a stadium closely linked to World Cup history.

Tonight’s fixture also recreates a famous World Cup opening game from 2010, when South Africa and Mexico played to a 1–1 draw in Johannesburg.

Mexico arrive in strong form and are carrying momentum into the tournament under coach Javier Aguirre.

Despite home advantage, Mexico are still chasing a milestone because they have never won an official World Cup opening match.

South Africa return to the World Cup stage for the first time since 2010 and this is their fourth appearance at the tournament.

South Africa coach Hugo Broos said his squad travelled early and spent time adjusting to altitude conditions and preparing specifically for Mexico’s style of play.

Broos described Mexico as the strongest side in the group but maintained that South Africa are ready to challenge and compete from the opening whistle.

Midfielder Teboho Mokoena said the squad wants to remain competitive and leave the tournament with no regrets.

Mexico’s squad also includes highly rated young talent such as Gilberto Mora, who has drawn attention ahead of the tournament.

Group A also features South Korea and Czech Republic, with qualification places available beyond the top two teams under the expanded format.

With global attention fixed on the opening night, Mexico and South Africa now carry the responsibility of launching what is expected to become the largest World Cup in football history.
