Defending champions Argentina have kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in emphatic fashion after cruising to a convincing 3-0 victory over Algeria, with captain Lionel Messi once again proving why he remains football’s ultimate difference-maker on the grandest stage.

Carrying the weight of expectation as reigning world champions, Argentina began their title defense with clear intent and authority, although Lionel Messi saw an early effort ruled out for offside in what was an immediate warning of the threat he posed throughout the contest.

La Albiceleste quickly established control of proceedings, dominating possession and dictating the tempo with confidence. Their persistence paid off in the 17th minute when a swift attacking move saw Rodrigo De Paul pick out Messi, who calmly slotted home with a composed finish to hand Argentina a deserved lead.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with the 2022 World Cup champions continuing to control the match while patiently searching for more openings against a disciplined but increasingly overwhelmed Algerian side.

Messi, once again demonstrating his trademark instincts and brilliance in front of goal, reacted quickest to a rebound after a deflected shot to double Argentina’s advantage and further stamp his authority on the match.

With the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner orchestrating much of Argentina’s attacking play and producing moments of pure creativity, a third goal felt inevitable — and it duly arrived as Messi completed a sensational hat-trick, registering his first-ever FIFA World Cup hat-trick and taking his overall World Cup tally to 16 goals in a truly historic night for the Argentine legend.

The victory gives Argentina the perfect start in their quest to defend the title they famously lifted in Qatar four years ago, while sending an early warning to the rest of the competition that the champions remain fully focused on retaining their crown.

For Messi, the performance served as yet another reminder that even as football enters a new generation, he continues to deliver when it matters most, inspiring his nation once again on the world’s biggest stage.

And if this opening performance is anything to go by, Argentina’s dream of securing back-to-back world titles remains very much alive.
