Argentina secured qualification for the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after captain Lionel Messi produced a match-winning display in a 2–0 victory over Austria in their second Group J fixture.

The defending champions delivered another composed performance to register back-to-back wins and confirm progression to the knockout stage with one group match still to play. Argentina had earlier opened their campaign with a convincing victory over Algeria, placing them firmly in control of Group J.

Messi played the decisive role despite an earlier setback in the match. The Argentine captain missed from the penalty spot but quickly recovered to break the deadlock in the first half and guide his side into the lead before the interval.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner struck his second goal in stoppage time to seal the result and underline his continued influence on the international stage. The brace ensured Argentina maintained a perfect defensive record after two matches.

The goals also marked another milestone in Messi’s extraordinary career. His World Cup tally moved to 18 goals, establishing a new all-time scoring record across men’s and women’s FIFA World Cup competitions.

Argentina’s attacking movement and ball control once again proved decisive as they controlled key phases of the encounter against an Austria side that remained competitive but struggled to convert opportunities.

Head coach Lionel Scaloni praised the squad’s discipline and execution, while highlighting the experience and leadership Messi continues to bring to a team aiming to defend the title won in Qatar four years earlier.

Argentina will now turn attention to their final Group J match against Jordan, where victory could secure top position in the group and potentially provide a more favourable route into the knockout rounds.
