A memorial service for former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo is currently underway at his Goseta home in Trans Nzoia County, bringing together family members, friends, political leaders and supporters to pay tribute to the veteran politician. The gathering marks a key moment in the final farewell to a figure who remained influential in Kenyan politics for decades.
Jirongo passed away following a road accident on December 13, an incident that shocked the nation and triggered widespread mourning across the political divide. Leaders from various parties described him as a fearless mobiliser and a strategic political operator whose legacy extended beyond elective politics.
Following the memorial service in Trans Nzoia, the family has confirmed that his body will be transported to Lumakanda, his rural home in Kakamega County, where final burial preparations have been completed. The burial ceremony is scheduled to take place tomorrow, in line with family arrangements and local customs.
Several national and regional leaders are expected to attend the burial, underscoring Jirongo’s extensive political networks and long-standing influence, particularly in Western Kenya. Residents of Lumakanda have also been streaming into the area to support the family and participate in traditional mourning rites.
As funeral arrangements continue, the family has renewed calls for authorities to finalise investigations into the accident that claimed Jirongo’s life. Mourners say he will be remembered for his outspoken leadership style, political bravery and lasting impact on Kenya’s multiparty democracy.
