Fred Matiangi meets youths to encourage mass registration as voters ahead of 2027 general elections

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has urged young Kenyans to take an active role in the country’s democratic process by registering as voters ahead of the 2027 general election. Addressing a group of Gen Z visitors, Matiang’i stressed that youth involvement is critical for building a strong and inclusive democracy.

He emphasized that while young people make up a large proportion of Kenya’s population, their participation in elections has often been lower than expected. “Your voice matters, and it starts with registering to vote,” he said, encouraging students and first-time voters to engage early.

Matiang’i described voter registration as more than a civic duty; he called it a foundation for shaping national leadership and influencing policy decisions. He noted that without active youth participation, the country risks leaving important decisions to older generations.

The former Interior CS urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to expand registration drives targeting colleges, universities, and urban youth centers. He called for innovative outreach programs that make the registration process more accessible and convenient for young people.

His remarks align with broader initiatives by civil society and government agencies to increase youth voter registration nationwide. The IEBC has previously highlighted the need to mobilize young voters, especially as the next general election approaches.

Political analysts say that engaging the youth could be decisive in the upcoming elections. With citizens under 35 constituting a significant share of the electorate, their votes could shape outcomes at both national and county levels.

Matiang’i concluded by urging young Kenyans not to be passive observers but active participants in shaping the country’s future. He reinforced the message that every registered voter contributes to a stronger democracy and a more accountable government.
