Jubilee Party flag bearer Dr Fred Matiangi during the Church Service at the 1Meru Central Seventh Day Adventist Church as we begin Day 3 of our Meru County tour.
Jubilee presidential flag bearer Fred Matiang’i on Saturday used a church service in Meru to deliver a message centered on faith, leadership and national responsibility, while also calling for urgent action to address challenges facing Kenya’s education sector.
“We are walking the journey of this life with challenges that everyone is facing as we are facing them.”
Addressing congregants, Matiang’i said attending church should not be interpreted as a sign of being more righteous than others but as an opportunity for reflection and worship. He described faith as a personal journey that should inspire humility and service.
“It doesn't mean… that we are so holy, we are better than other people.”
The former Interior Cabinet Secretary expressed appreciation to Christians and members of the Seventh-day Adventist community in Meru for hosting him and accompanying him during his visit to the county.
“I am so happy to be here to worship with my fellow Christians and Adventists.”
Matiang’i also highlighted the importance of interdenominational understanding, saying he intended to attend another church service with his host in order to experience a different style of worship and fellowship.
“Tomorrow, Peter is taking me to his church… to see how the Methodist service is conducted.”
During his remarks, Matiang’i linked spiritual commitment with public service and argued that leadership should remain grounded in values rather than personal ambition. He maintained that service to God should remain the highest calling.
“There’s nothing better you can do with your life than to serve the Lord… heaven is better than State House.”
He told congregants that his political journey is driven by a desire to make an honest contribution to the country and emphasized that patriotism must be demonstrated through sincere service.
“We are in this because we want to make an honest, open, and sincere contribution to our country.”
Turning to national issues, Matiang’i said Kenya is facing serious education challenges and called on leaders to acknowledge the scale of the problem rather than dismiss public concern.
“It’s abundantly clear that you have a problem and you have a crisis.”
The Jubilee flag bearer proposed that leaders across the political divide hold an all-parties conversation focused specifically on education, saying children’s welfare should rise above political competition.
“Our children are suffering and we are spending time calling each other names.”
Matiang’i appealed directly for cooperation between government and opposition, saying constitutional respect should not prevent leaders from working together to stabilize the education sector.
“I hope our president will see it as a genuine and sincere need for us to have an all-parties conversation.”
He also raised concerns about rising school costs and questioned how families are expected to sustain increasing education expenses while supporting multiple learners.
“Who’s going to pay a national school fee of 115,000?”
Looking at solutions, Matiang’i argued for reducing wasteful government expenditure and redirecting public resources toward education and health while strengthening oversight of curriculum implementation.
“I would cut down the wastage of government… and pour all that money into education and health.”
He further called for wider engagement with churches, education professionals and school stakeholders, saying institutions with long experience in education should play a greater role in shaping policy discussions.
“We sit down with them and work with them and then slowly we work with the professionals.”
Closing his address, Matiang’i asked worshippers to pray for leaders and for integrity in public service, saying leadership should honor faith and reflect values of honesty, responsibility and service.
“If the Lord gives me the opportunity to serve Him in this capacity, I will do the work. God bless you.”
