Gueye conduct against Keane before red card booking
Former Everton manager Roberto Martínez has backed the referee’s call to send off Idrissa Gueye during Everton’s match against Manchester United, insisting the officials applied the laws correctly. Gueye was shown a straight red card in the 13th minute after striking teammate Michael Keane in an unusual on-field altercation.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Martínez said the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding but still met the criteria for violent conduct. “Clearly, it’s a misunderstanding; Gueye is trying to play the ball [to Keane], but it’s that reaction, the slap,” he said. “The referee has no other choice because the law tells you that any aggression above the neck is a red card.”
Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg also supported the decision, stating that it was correct “by the letter of the law.” However, Gary Neville questioned the severity, saying the contact looked “negligible” and suggesting a yellow card could have been considered.
Everton manager David Moyes later defended the midfielder, saying, “I like my players fighting,” as he downplayed the confrontation between his players. Gueye, meanwhile, apologised after the match, admitting he “takes full responsibility” for the incident, which overshadowed Everton’s eventual victory over Manchester United.
