A major political rally under the Linda Mwananchi banner was held in Kisumu on April 26, 2026, bringing together senior opposition figures who used the platform to deliver coordinated messaging on leadership, governance, and the 2027 elections.
The event featured speeches from Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna,Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Siaya Governor James Orengo and Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino, drawing large crowds at K’Owuor Grounds in Kibos.
The rally followed earlier engagements in Kisumu, including a church service in Nyalenda and a public procession that attracted significant public attention.
Security agencies were deployed across the area to maintain order during the political gathering, reflecting heightened sensitivity around opposition mobilisation in the region.
Sifuna began his address by reflecting on the death of Raila Odinga, stating: “It has been six months since we lost our father, Honorable Raila Amolo Odinga.”
He added: “I was there at the stadium and many of you thought the body of Baba would arrive... and there would be chaos.”
He described the emotional weight of the moment, saying: “The day Baba died is the day I knew my mental health and wellness was in the fire I knew it would be hectic for me in the ODM Party.”
Sifuna also referenced expectations placed on him after Odinga’s death, noting: “They told me, ‘Sifuna, you were Baba's friend, go and bring him out of India.’”
Addressing political competition, Sifuna questioned doubts about opposition strength, asking: “Who told you ODM cannot have a president/candidate in general elections the year 2027?”
He repeated the question multiple times for emphasis: “Who told you? Who told you? Who told you? Who told you? Who told you?”
He also echoed campaign chants from supporters, including: “One term, one term, hands up, hands up!”
Sifuna referred to past political arrangements linked to the United Democratic Alliance, stating: “I am the one who wrote that contract; I know it inside and out .”
He added that within those arrangements, accountability expectations were outlined, and emphasised the need for enforcement of political commitments.
He further stated concerns about protection of young people, saying there is need to avoid harsh responses to online expression.
Sifuna also raised concerns about law enforcement conduct, stating: “We saw police entering houses in Nyalenda and pulling out people who had no fault.”
He referenced past national incidents that have drawn attention and called for justice and accountability in such cases.
He emphasised inter-community relations, stating: “There is no one who will come between the relationship of the Mulembe people and the Luos of Nyanza.”
He added: “Luo Nyanza... you have given me respect, you have taken me as one of your own.”
He also praised Babu Owino, stating he represents a story of social mobility supported by community contributions.
Osotsi addressed supporters by questioning political alignment and participation, urging continued engagement in democratic processes.
He referenced hostility toward opposition figures, stating he had been questioned about his presence in Kisumu due to political affiliation.
He also told the crowd: “I want to ask the people of Kisumu: do you want guests to come here or not?”
Osotsi rejected ethnic division narratives, stating that Luhya and Luo communities remain united through long-standing social ties.
He added that inter-community relations have been strengthened through cultural and family connections.
Referring to the death of Raila Odinga, Osotsi stated that succession discussions within ODM had been influenced by external political pressure.
He suggested that internal party decisions were affected by external involvement, though no evidence was provided.
He also alleged increased political influence in party matters and called for preservation of party independence.
He highlighted internal party figures and said some leaders had played a role in stabilising grassroots structures.
Osotsi concluded his segment by urging unity within the opposition and encouraging younger leaders to take more active roles.
He engaged the crowd with rhetorical questions about Odinga’s legacy, reflecting continued emotional attachment among supporters.
Babu Owino began by describing his upbringing in Nyalenda, saying it shaped his political identity.
He credited community support for his education and early development.
He stated that youth from different areas should believe in their potential to rise into leadership positions.
He referred to Raila Odinga as a leader who encouraged courage and persistence in political engagement.
He said he had participated widely in national campaigns supporting Odinga across many constituencies.
He expressed strong emotional reflections on Odinga’s burial arrangements, questioning aspects of the process.
He called for respect in handling national leaders after death and emphasised dignity in public service.
He stated that political progress requires representation, saying: “If we are not on the table, we will break the table.”
He encouraged young people to pursue leadership roles and remain politically active.
He also expressed confidence that future generations from Nyanza would attain national leadership positions.
He announced his intention to contest for Nairobi governorship in 2027.
He concluded by highlighting economic challenges, stating that rising cost of living and fuel prices are affecting citizens.
He criticised government performance on economic issues and called for improved accountability in addressing public needs.
The rally concluded with calls for unity, mobilisation, and sustained political engagement ahead of the 2027 elections.
