Lawyers in Kenya have protested the transfer of High Court judge Justice Josephine Wayua Wambua to Machakos, citing concerns over transparency and accountability within the judiciary.
The judge is reportedly under investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission over alleged abuse of office and corruption linked to cases she handled at the Milimani Commercial and Tax Division.
Following the probe, Justice Wambua moved to court seeking orders to block her arrest, questioning, or investigation by the anti-graft agency and other state bodies.
A High Court subsequently issued conservatory orders temporarily barring authorities from taking action against her pending the hearing and determination of her application.
Amid these developments, the decision to transfer her to Machakos High Court sparked backlash from sections of the legal fraternity, who questioned the timing and motive of the move.
Lawyers staged protests and vowed to boycott court sessions, arguing that the transfer undermines due process and could interfere with ongoing investigations.
The protesting advocates also demanded the return of Justice Rhoda Rutto, saying her removal or displacement in the judicial reshuffle was unjustified.
They warned that continued interference in judicial postings risks eroding public confidence in the judiciary and compromising its independence.
The standoff has raised concerns over internal divisions within the judiciary and the handling of disciplinary and administrative actions involving judges.
Court operations in affected stations now face possible disruption as lawyers maintain pressure over the contested transfer and demand corrective action.
