Ibrahima Konaté leaves Liverpool as free agent, decision made.

Ibrahima Konaté is now widely expected to leave Liverpool when his contract expires in June 2026, after talks over a renewal collapsed despite months of negotiations between the club and the player’s representatives.

Multiple reports indicate that the French international will depart Anfield on a free transfer, bringing an end to a five-year spell during which he established himself as a key figure in Liverpool’s defence alongside Virgil van Dijk.

The breakdown in talks is understood to have followed prolonged discussions over salary structure and contract terms, with no final agreement reached before the deadline, despite earlier optimism from both sides.

Liverpool had attempted to secure an extension for several months, but negotiations ultimately stalled, leaving the defender free to enter pre-contract discussions with foreign clubs.

Paris Saint-Germain are currently viewed as the strongest contenders for his signature, with the French champions positioning themselves as a leading destination given Konaté’s nationality and their ongoing defensive rebuild.

Real Madrid remain firmly in the race, with the Spanish giants monitoring the situation as they continue to target high-profile free transfers in their long-term squad planning strategy.

Bayern Munich are also understood to be in contention, although their interest is considered slightly less advanced compared to PSG and Madrid at this stage of the process.

Chelsea have emerged as a Premier League option, with the London club reportedly exploring the possibility of adding experience and physical presence to their back line amid their broader squad restructuring.

Konaté’s departure would represent another significant loss for Liverpool’s defensive unit, with the club already preparing internally for a reshuffle ahead of the new season as they look to replace a centre-back entering his peak years.
