Kindiki Warns Against Divisive Politics Amid Mount Kenya Power Struggle

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki Attended Sunday Worship Service and the Induction of Rev David Mwiti as the new Bishop of Kaaga Synod
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Sunday intensified his political push in the Mount Kenya region as rivalry with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua escalated during parallel political activities in Meru County.
Kindiki spent Sunday in Meru County where he attended a church service at Kaaga Methodist Church in North Imenti Constituency during the induction ceremony of a Methodist Church bishop.
The deputy president addressed congregants and residents after the service, using the platform to respond to criticism from Gachagua and leaders allied to the emerging United Opposition coalition.
Kindiki warned politicians touring the Mount Kenya region against making inflammatory remarks that could divide communities, urging leaders to maintain peace and respect residents.
He accused his predecessor Gachagua of misleading residents through political messaging and undermining fellow leaders in the region.
The deputy president said political competition should not destabilize the region and urged leaders to prioritise development over political confrontation.
Kindiki also maintained that the national government remains committed to implementing development programmes across counties in the Mount Kenya region.
A heavy security presence was deployed around the church venue amid fears of confrontation between rival political camps attending events in the area.
Police officers blocked advance teams allied to the United Opposition from accessing the church compound where Kindiki was attending the ceremony.
Among opposition leaders who had planned to attend the same church event were Kalonzo Musyoka, Justin Muturi and several other political figures allied to Gachagua.
After being denied entry to the Methodist church, the opposition leaders later proceeded to a separate church service at the East Africa Pentecostal Church in Njotene in Meru County.
During the Meru visit, Kindiki was accompanied by pro-government political leaders and local officials aligned with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Leaders accompanying the deputy president defended the government and urged residents to reject what they described as divisive politics promoted by opposition leaders.
They argued that the United Opposition alliance lacked a clear development agenda and was mainly driven by political grievances against the government.
The leaders further called on Mount Kenya residents to remain united behind the national government to ensure continued development and political influence.
Sunday’s events highlighted the intensifying political battle for influence in the Mount Kenya region as rival camps linked to Kindiki and Gachagua continue mobilising support ahead of the 2027 general election.
