Deputy President Professor Kithure Kindiki speaks to supporters of the UDA government in Kirinyaga today
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Thursday conducted an extensive development tour of Gichugu Constituency in Kirinyaga County, where he inspected key government projects and outlined progress in infrastructure, electrification and market development.
During a visit to Kiaumbui, Kindiki said the government is targeting universal electricity access within the next four years, noting that 10.3 million out of Kenya’s 15.6 million households are already connected to power.
He added that 1.4 million households have been connected to electricity since 2023, underscoring the administration’s commitment to expanding access as part of a broader economic transformation agenda.
In Kirinyaga County, the Deputy President said ongoing electrification projects aim to connect an additional 7,300 households at a cost of KSh440 million, boosting livelihoods and supporting small businesses.
Kindiki inspected the Kiaumbui last-mile electrification project, which is expected to connect 149 households, businesses and public institutions at a cost of KSh10.9 million.
At Mukarara in Gichugu Constituency, he assessed the progress of the Mukarara Fresh Produce Market, which is now 90 percent complete and expected to provide traders with a modern and hygienic working environment.
The market will include an ICT hub to support youth in e-commerce, a mother’s room for lactating traders, a social hall and cold storage facilities aimed at reducing post-harvest losses.
Kindiki noted that the government, through the Housing Fund, is constructing nearly 500 similar markets across the country, adding that Mukarara market is valued at KSh55 million, with additional projects underway in Kianyaga, Mbiri and Mururi.
On infrastructure, the Deputy President said road construction has resumed nationwide following the settlement of KSh177 billion owed to contractors, enabling stalled projects to continue.
He said more than 6,000 kilometres of roads are currently under construction across the country, including the Riakithiga–Ngungu–Kiang’ombe road in Kirinyaga, which forms part of 510 kilometres of roads being built in the county at a cost of about KSh29 billion.
Kindiki later held a public engagement forum in Riakithiga, where he updated residents on ongoing government interventions, accompanied by Kirinyaga Deputy Governor David Githanda, Gichugu MP Gichimu Githinji, Mwea MP Mary Maingi and Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni.
