Deputy President Kithure Kindiki flagge off the WRC Safari Rally in Naivasha
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Thursday flagged off the 2026 edition of the Safari Rally Kenya at the Wildlife Research and Training Institute in Naivasha, Nakuru County, marking the official start of one of the most anticipated motorsport events in the country.
The rally is part of the global World Rally Championship calendar and has attracted top international drivers alongside Kenyan competitors eager to test their skills on the challenging terrain of the Rift Valley.
Kindiki said the government had put in place adequate security and logistical arrangements to ensure the event runs smoothly and safely for drivers, officials, and spectators attending the competition.
Security agencies deployed more than a thousand officers across rally routes and service areas to manage crowds and guarantee the safety of participants throughout the four-day event.
The Deputy President noted that the rally remains a key platform for showcasing Kenya’s scenic landscapes and hospitality to a global audience following the event across different media platforms.
He added that the government will continue supporting international sporting events that promote tourism, investment, and economic activity in the country.
Drivers began the rally with preliminary runs before the ceremonial flag-off in Naivasha, with competitors preparing to tackle multiple stages spread across rugged tracks in Nakuru County and its surroundings.
The rally stages are expected to test endurance, navigation, and speed as drivers battle through dusty roads, rocky surfaces, and unpredictable weather conditions typical of the Safari Rally.
Hotels and businesses in Naivasha have reported increased activity as thousands of rally fans, teams, and officials arrived in the town ahead of the competition.
The event will run until Sunday when the final stage and closing ceremony are scheduled at Hell’s Gate National Park, bringing the 2026 Safari Rally Kenya to a close.
