Kimani Ichung’wah Slams Gachagua Over Funeral Disrespect

Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung'wa

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah sharply criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during the funeral of the late Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho, accusing him of showing disrespect during the solemn ceremony.

“It was veryous of Gachagua, the other bearded character, to go even without paying any regard to the morning family and those children,” Ichung’wah said.

“Honorable Speaker of honorable Kiaraho, including the chairperson of the committee that organized that wonderful ceremony, was dressed down politically the way we saw yesterday. It was cold; it is not necessary,” he added.

He stressed the need to keep politics away from funerals. “I hope that from here going forward we shall style up,” Ichung’wah said.

Ichung’wah criticized Gachagua’s claims about President William Ruto’s relationship with the Mt Kenya region. “Gachagua’s remarks suggesting that the president has no friends in Mt Kenya are misleading, coming from someone pretending he can lecture the president and pretending he is the one to allow the president to speak to the people of Mt Kenya.”

He also warned against the disruption of local communities. “God forbid anyone else dies, but in that area, we, the MPs, will not go. What we oppose is bringing goons from Githurai and Kayole to come and loot businesses in Kikuyu town.”

Despite the criticism, Ichung’wah clarified that he had no issue with Gachagua visiting his constituency. “I have no concerns about Gachagua visiting his Kikuyu constituency,” he said.

Gachagua, however, defended his actions and insisted his remarks had a basis. “Nevertheless, my statements were grounded. However, I am not sure whether my grievances against the president will be considered. I filed a complaint yesterday against William Ruto, but the complaint was meaningless because the one who sent him is Ruto himself.”

He questioned Ichung’wah’s loyalty. “Even now, I ask myself, how can you prosecute Kimani Ichung’wah on behalf of William Ruto? And it is Ruto who gave him the money. So you, Kimani Ichung’wah, my brother.”

Gachagua also accused the president of interfering in family matters. “Gachagua accused President William Ruto of meddling in his family affairs, and I will continue. You have seen the chaos they brought; I do not know whose property they seized, or if they took the orphaned children’s possessions. No one listens to this nonsense.”

He defended his character and integrity. “People know us. They know who we are, they know the kind of character and integrity we have. We have proven ourselves before the citizens of Kenya.”

The funeral clash has sparked debates about the appropriateness of political commentary during solemn occasions.

Observers say the confrontation reflects broader political tensions in Mt Kenya and ongoing friction between Gachagua and Ruto’s allies.

The debate highlights concerns over respect, decorum, and the politicization of funerals, especially as Kenya heads toward the 2027 general elections.

Political analysts warn that continued confrontations could deepen divisions in central Kenya, a key voting bloc in national politics.

The episode has reignited public discussion about how leaders should conduct themselves at ceremonial and sensitive events, emphasizing unity and decorum over political competition.
