The High Court of Kenya sitting in Mombasa has sentenced a man to 30 years in prison for the murder of his wife in Kilifi County following a domestic dispute linked to social media activity.

The convict, Murad Awadh Mbaraka, was found guilty of killing his wife, Nuru Ibrahim, at their home in Majengo Kanamai on June 19, 2022.

Court proceedings established that the couple had experienced ongoing domestic disagreements, including conflicts related to the deceased’s use of Instagram.

Evidence presented before the court showed that the accused fatally attacked his wife during one of the disputes inside their residence.

Forensic analysis linked the victim’s blood to a knife recovered from the scene, fragments of a broken baby cot, and clothing belonging to the accused.

Witnesses testified during the trial, and the court dismissed the defence argument that an unknown intruder was responsible for the killing.

In delivering the sentence, the court considered the violent circumstances of the offence and the need for deterrence in cases of domestic violence.

The 30-year custodial sentence will run from the date of conviction, with the convict retaining the right to challenge the verdict and sentence in a higher court.
