Former cabinet secretary Raphael Tuju to appear in court on April 8th 2026

The Kibera Law Courts has directed former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju to appear in court on April 8, 2026, after his lawyers indicated they will challenge the validity of his charge sheet in an alleged abduction case.

Tuju, a former senior government official, was arrested following reports that he had been abducted. Investigators allege that the abduction was staged and that Tuju provided false information to the police.

The charge sheet claims Tuju knowingly misled law enforcement by reporting a non-existent abduction, triggering a nationwide response and public alarm. Prosecutors argue that these actions constitute a criminal offence under Kenya’s Penal Code Section 129.

Tuju’s legal team has raised procedural objections, contending that the charge sheet is defective and must be reviewed by the court before he enters a formal plea. The court has scheduled a mention date for April 8 to hear arguments on these preliminary issues.

Earlier this week, Tuju secured an anticipatory bond of Sh200,000, allowing his conditional release while the legal process continues. His lawyers also cited his recent medical condition as a reason for potential delays in proceedings.

Prosecutors have opposed any delay, insisting that the court should address the procedural objections promptly before moving to substantive hearings. Legal analysts say the April mention will clarify the handling of high-profile procedural challenges in Kenya’s criminal justice system.

The case has attracted public attention, raising questions about the responsibilities of public figures when reporting security threats and how the law treats false claims of abduction.
