Kenyatta University Appoints Prof. John Okumu As Seventh Vice-Chancellor

The Kenyatta University Council has appointed Professor John Okumu as the institution's substantive Vice-Chancellor, with his appointment taking effect on July 27, 2026. He succeeds Professor Paul Wainaina, becoming the university's seventh Vice-Chancellor since Kenyatta University attained full university status.
The appointment was announced by the University Council following the conclusion of the recruitment process to fill the university's top leadership position. Prof. Okumu had been serving as the Acting Vice-Chancellor since January 2026 after the retirement of Prof. Wainaina.
During his stint as Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Okumu oversaw the university's daily operations while ensuring continuity in academic programmes, research activities and administrative functions. His leadership came during a period of transition for one of Kenya's largest public universities.
Prof. Okumu is a distinguished Professor of Physics with more than three decades of experience in teaching, research and university management. Over the years, he has built a strong reputation in higher education through his contributions to academic leadership and institutional development.
Before assuming the acting role, he served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs, where he was responsible for overseeing curriculum development, quality assurance, student academic programmes and research coordination across the university.
Academically, Prof. Okumu holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. He also earned both his Master's degree and Bachelor of Education (Science) from Kenyatta University.
Earlier this year, Prof. Okumu emerged as the top candidate during interviews conducted as part of the recruitment process for the substantive Vice-Chancellor position. His performance in the selection process paved the way for the University Council to confirm his appointment.
University officials expressed confidence that his extensive experience in university administration and academic leadership will strengthen governance, improve research output and enhance the institution's competitiveness both locally and internationally.
As Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Okumu will serve as the university's chief executive and chief academic officer, providing overall strategic leadership, implementing council policies and overseeing financial management, academic excellence and institutional growth.
His appointment comes at a time when Kenyan universities are increasingly focusing on digital transformation, innovation, international collaborations and expanding research capacity to meet emerging national and global development needs.
Kenyatta University remains one of Kenya's leading public institutions of higher learning, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across numerous disciplines while serving tens of thousands of students from Kenya and beyond.
