Lucas Wandia fulfils golden promise in Tokyo
Kenya’s athletes continue to light up the 2025 Tokyo Deaflympics with a string of outstanding performances that have pushed the country’s medal tally to 10, marking one of Kenya’s strongest showings at the global event. The team has so far secured four gold, four silver and two bronze medals, largely driven by the nation’s traditional dominance in middle- and long-distance races.
Ian Wambui Kahinga opened Kenya’s gold rush with a commanding victory in the men’s 10,000 metres, clocking 29:19.56, before James Mwanza Musembi added the second gold in the men’s 1,500 metres with a time of 3:45.61. The golden momentum continued as Lucas Wanjiru Wandia defended his 3,000m steeplechase title, while Elikana Kiprop Rono delivered another top-podium finish in the men’s 800 metres.
Kenya’s silver medals were spread across individual and team efforts, including David Kiptum Kipkogei’s strong run in the 10,000 metres and the 4×400 metres mixed relay squad featuring Simon Gona Menza, Linet Fwamba Nanjala, Isaac Tongi Atima and Beryl Atieno Wamira. Rono also claimed silver in the 1,500 metres, with Jacob Kipkemoi Kibet sealing another in the men’s steeplechase.
On the women’s side, Kenya earned two bronze medals through Sharon Bitok Jeptarus in the 1,500 metres and Serah Wangari Kimani in the 10,000 metres. With several events still underway, Team Kenya remains optimistic about adding to its growing collection of medals as the Tokyo Deaflympics enter the final stretch.
