FKF President Hussein Mohammed has announced that, for the first time in history, Kenya will host a FIFA Women’s Tournament Series event.
Kenya is set to make history after securing the rights to host matches of the FIFA Series 2026, marking the first time the country will stage an official FIFA global tournament. The development signals a major breakthrough for Kenyan football on the international stage.
The matches will be held in Nairobi between April 11 and April 15, 2026, with all fixtures scheduled at the Nyayo National Stadium, one of the country’s premier sporting venues.
The FIFA Series is a relatively new competition introduced by FIFA to provide more international match opportunities by bringing together national teams from different continents in mini-tournament formats.
Kenya will host one of the women’s groups in the 2026 edition, which will also mark the first time the FIFA Series features women’s national teams, highlighting a growing emphasis on the women’s game globally.
The Nairobi-hosted group will feature four national teams: Kenya’s Harambee Starlets alongside Australia, India, and Malawi, offering a diverse mix of playing styles and competitive levels.
The tournament format will see opening matches played on April 11, with winners progressing to the final while losing sides face off in a third-place playoff scheduled for April 15.
Globally, the tournament will feature 16 women’s teams spread across four host nations, with Kenya joining Brazil, Côte d’Ivoire, and Thailand in staging the competition.
Football Kenya Federation president Hussein Mohammed has welcomed the development, describing it as a significant boost to the country’s football ambitions and international standing.
Hussein noted that the tournament will provide Kenyan players with crucial exposure to high-level competition, enabling them to test themselves against teams from different continents and improve tactically and competitively.
He added that hosting the FIFA Series reflects growing confidence in Kenya’s ability to organize international events and aligns with broader efforts to strengthen football structures ahead of major tournaments such as the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
