Kenya celebrates scoring against Gambia
Kenya’s Harambee Starlets produced a dominant display at Nyayo Stadium, coming from behind to beat The Gambia 3-1 in the first leg of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier.
The visitors stunned the home crowd early when Fatoumata Kanteh opened the scoring for The Gambia in the third minute. However, the Starlets quickly regrouped and showed strong character to overturn the deficit before halftime.
Mwanahalima Adam levelled the score from the penalty spot, before Fasila Adhiambo and Shirleen Opisa struck to give Kenya a comfortable advantage heading into the return leg. The hosts controlled much of the play, creating several more chances as they pushed for a bigger margin.
The return leg will be played on Tuesday, October 28, at the Stade Lat Dior in Thiès, Senegal, where The Gambia are expected to host their home match. Kenya only need a draw or any win to progress to the next round of qualification for WAFCON.
The result marks an important step for the Harambee Starlets as they aim to secure their place at the continental tournament and make a strong statement of intent on their road back to WAFCON.
