Kenya Aviation Workers Union Calls Off Two-Day Strike After Deal With Transport Ministry

The Kenya Aviation Workers Union has called off its two-day strike following a meeting with the Ministry of Transport, paving the way for the full resumption of operations across the country’s aviation sector.

The industrial action had disrupted flight schedules, particularly at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where passengers experienced delays and cancellations as workers downed tools over unresolved labour grievances.

Union officials and government representatives, alongside management from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and the Kenya Airports Authority, reached an agreement addressing key concerns raised in the strike notice.

Central to the deal was a commitment that union dues would be properly deducted and remitted, resolving one of the union’s primary complaints regarding affected staff within the aviation authorities.

The parties further agreed that outstanding labour issues would be subjected to a formal conciliation process under the oversight of the Labour Ministry to ensure structured negotiations going forward.

A critical assurance in the settlement was that no employee who participated in the strike would face victimisation or disciplinary action, a safeguard that union leaders had insisted upon during talks.

Airport authorities confirmed that flight operations were gradually stabilising, with airlines working to clear backlogs created during the two-day disruption.

The strike had underscored broader tensions within the aviation workforce over employment terms and administrative processes, drawing national attention due to its impact on international and domestic travel.

With the agreement now in place, both the union and government signalled readiness to pursue dialogue mechanisms aimed at preventing future disruptions in Kenya’s aviation sector.
