Eleven pupils were injured after a septic tank cover collapsed at AIC Kapsabet Senior School for the Hearing Impaired in Nandi County on Thursday morning.
The incident occurred when learners were reportedly standing on or near the old septic tank, which gave way under their weight.
Hospital authorities confirmed that one learner died from injuries sustained in the accident.
The remaining ten pupils were rushed to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital for treatment, where their conditions are being closely monitored.
Some reports indicate the students had gathered near the tank out of curiosity as President William Ruto’s motorcade passed by the area.
Emergency response teams, including county disaster officers, arrived promptly to rescue the injured pupils and secure the scene.
The collapse has raised concerns over the safety of school infrastructure, particularly older structures that may be poorly maintained.
President William Ruto visited the school to express condolences to the families and the school community.
During his visit, the President donated KSh 5 million to support recovery and infrastructure improvements at the school.
Local authorities and school administrators are assessing the site to ensure the safety of the remaining students and prevent future incidents.
Emergency services continue to monitor the injured learners as medical care and counselling support are provided.
Investigations into the cause of the infrastructure failure are ongoing, and further updates are expected as authorities work to prevent similar accidents in the future.
