Kenya Airports Authority chief executive officer Moses Wekesa

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has officially appointed Moses Wekesa as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant leadership transition at the state corporation that oversees the country’s aviation infrastructure.

The appointment was confirmed by the KAA Board of Directors on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, following what the authority described as a rigorous and competitive recruitment process aimed at securing a substantive head after a prolonged period of acting leadership.

Wekesa takes over from Mohamud Gedi, who had been serving in an acting capacity as the authority sought to fill the position permanently. His appointment is expected to bring stability and strategic direction to the organisation.

In his new role, Wekesa will be responsible for overseeing the management, development, and expansion of airports and airstrips across the country, including the flagship Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), which remains central to Kenya’s aviation and economic ambitions.

The new CEO is also expected to spearhead ongoing modernisation efforts at JKIA, including infrastructure upgrades and capacity expansion projects aimed at improving passenger experience and positioning Nairobi as a regional aviation hub.

Before his appointment, Wekesa served as Business Development Director at Kenya Electricity Generating Company, where he was involved in driving strategic projects and partnerships within the energy sector.

He brings with him extensive experience in engineering and project management, having worked on large-scale infrastructure projects across multiple regions, including Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific, which the board believes will be instrumental in transforming KAA.

Academically, Wekesa holds an engineering degree from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and a master’s degree from University of Nairobi, alongside further postgraduate training in finance and project planning from the University of Bradford.

The appointment comes after nearly two years of leadership uncertainty at KAA following the exit of former Managing Director Alex Gitari in 2023, which had left the authority under interim leadership during a critical period for the aviation sector.

Wekesa now assumes office at a time when KAA is under increasing pressure to deliver on key infrastructure projects, enhance operational efficiency, and support the recovery and growth of Kenya’s aviation industry amid rising passenger demand and regional competition.
