Jubilee Faces Internal Dispute Over 2027 Presidential Pick

A growing number of Jubilee Party aspirants are demanding explanations from party leadership over the process that saw Fred Matiang’i emerge as the party’s flagbearer for the 2027 presidential election. Their calls for transparency reflect broader unease within the party about internal decision‑making and coordination ahead of the next general election.

Matiang’i, a former Interior Cabinet Secretary, was formally endorsed by Jubilee during a National Executive Council meeting chaired by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in October 2025. At that meeting, he was also appointed Deputy Party Leader and confirmed as the party’s nominee, a move Jubilee says positions the party to revive its national presence and strengthen its role within the United Opposition.

The endorsement marked Matiang’i’s return to active politics after years abroad following his service in senior government roles. Party officials said the NEC’s decision was unanimous and aimed at consolidating Jubilee’s strategy ahead of 2027, with a focus on rebuilding grassroots support and broadening political coalitions.

However, some Jubilee aspirants have voiced frustration over how the flagbearer nomination was handled, arguing that the process should be more inclusive and reflective of wider party membership. These critics want clear criteria on how Matiang’i was chosen, alleging that internal consultation was limited and that ordinary delegates were not adequately involved in the decision.

Among the voices seeking clarification is former legislator Ngunjiri Wambugu, who has publicly challenged party leadership to explain its alliances and zoning plans that influenced the flagbearer selection. Wambugu has called on Uhuru Kenyatta to articulate how strategic partnerships and regional considerations factored into Matiang’i’s nomination and what implications this holds for aspirants from different regions.

The issue of alliances is particularly significant as Jubilee is part of a wider opposition coalition — the United Opposition — that includes leaders such as Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The coalition is working to present a united front against President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration in 2027, but tensions over leadership and candidate selection have surfaced amid ongoing negotiations.

Matiang’i has publicly defended the need for a transparent and inclusive process for choosing a united opposition flagbearer, insisting that any decision must be free and clear to prevent divisions that could undermine the coalition’s effectiveness. He has urged for a scientific, democratic formula if multiple contenders emerge within the opposition ranks.

Political analysts say the dispute underscores wider challenges facing Jubilee in balancing internal democracy with strategic positioning in a competitive political environment. Critics argue that unresolved questions over nomination processes and alliance agreements could weaken party cohesion if not addressed promptly.

As the 2027 election cycle approaches, the party’s handling of the Matiang’i nomination and subsequent calls for answers will likely influence Jubilee’s internal unity and its role within opposition coalition dynamics.
