Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has distributed 700 goats to Muslim families and mosques across the city ahead of Eid al-Adha celebrations, in a move aimed at supporting vulnerable households during the religious holiday.

The distribution exercise was conducted at Uhuru Park on Wednesday and brought together county officials, religious leaders and residents from different parts of Nairobi. Beneficiaries included families from informal settlements, low-income estates and several mosques within the capital.

Sakaja said the county government launched the initiative to ensure more Muslim families are able to celebrate Eid with dignity despite the rising cost of living and increasing livestock prices ahead of the festivities.

The governor noted that Eid al-Adha represents sacrifice, compassion and generosity, adding that the county administration wanted to strengthen unity and social support among communities during the celebrations.

According to county officials, the goats were distributed through local mosque committees and community leaders who helped identify vulnerable families in need of assistance ahead of the holiday.

Religious leaders who attended the event praised the programme, saying it would reduce the financial burden on many households that would otherwise struggle to purchase animals for sacrifice during Eid celebrations.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is among the most important holidays in the Islamic calendar. The celebration commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God before a ram was provided instead.

Muslims traditionally mark the occasion through prayers, slaughtering of animals such as goats and sheep, and sharing meat with relatives, neighbours and vulnerable members of society as part of charitable giving.

The donation exercise comes as Muslim communities across Kenya prepare for Eid al-Adha celebrations amid economic pressures and high food prices, with leaders calling for unity, peace and support for disadvantaged families during the holiday period.
