Kenyan born Job Ochieng made a debut with Real Sociedad
Kenyan football history was written after Job Ochieng became the third Kenyan player to feature in LaLiga, making his Spanish top-flight debut for Real Sociedad. The milestone marked a significant achievement for both the player and the country, underlining Kenya’s growing presence in elite European football.
Ochieng came off the bench in the second half as Real Sociedad recorded a 3–1 victory over Elche at the Reale Arena. The 23-year-old forward earned his first minutes in Spain’s top division after spending much of the season featuring for the club’s reserve side.
The debut crowned a steady rise through the ranks for the Nairobi-born attacker, who has progressed through Real Sociedad C and B before earning a first-team call-up. His performances in training and lower-tier matches had gradually put him on the radar of the senior technical bench.
With his appearance, Ochieng joined an exclusive list of Kenyans to have played in LaLiga. He follows McDonald Mariga, who featured for Real Sociedad in the 2011/12 season, and Michael Olunga, who starred for Girona and famously scored a hat-trick in the league.
Real Sociedad’s coaching staff have previously highlighted Ochieng’s discipline, pace and tactical awareness, qualities that have helped him adapt to the demands of top-flight football. While his debut cameo was brief, it was viewed as a strong statement of trust from the club.
The achievement has been widely celebrated in Kenya, with fans and football stakeholders hailing it as an inspiration for young players aspiring to play at the highest level. Attention now turns to whether Ochieng can build on his historic debut and secure more regular opportunities in LaLiga before the season ends.
