Iran’s Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib

Israel’s Defence Ministry has announced that Iran’s Intelligence Minister, Esmail Khatib, was killed in a targeted airstrike in Tehran, in what marks a significant escalation in hostilities between the two regional adversaries.

Defence Minister Israel Katz said the overnight operation specifically targeted Khatib, describing the strike as part of an expanded campaign against Iran’s senior security leadership.

According to Israeli officials, the strike was carried out with precise intelligence, reflecting what they describe as deep operational penetration inside Iran’s capital and security apparatus.

Iranian authorities initially remained silent following the claim, neither confirming nor denying the reported killing in the immediate aftermath of the strike.

However, subsequent statements from officials in Iran indicated that Khatib had been killed, making him one of the highest-ranking figures lost in the ongoing conflict.

Khatib had served as intelligence minister since 2021 and was regarded as a central figure in Iran’s internal security operations, counterintelligence, and regional intelligence coordination.

The reported killing comes amid a broader wave of Israeli strikes targeting senior Iranian figures, signalling a shift toward dismantling the country’s command and intelligence structures.

Israeli leadership maintains that such operations are aimed at weakening Iran’s strategic capabilities and deterring further attacks against Israeli interests.

In response, Iran has intensified retaliatory measures, including missile and drone strikes directed at Israeli territory and allied positions in the region.

The developments have raised concerns of a widening conflict, with growing fears that continued escalation could draw in other regional and international actors.

Strategic routes, including key energy corridors, are now under heightened risk, with global markets closely monitoring the situation for potential disruptions.

The latest developments underscore a rapidly intensifying confrontation, with both sides signalling readiness for sustained engagement in a conflict that continues to evolve.
