Iran’s military says its naval forces launched a shore-to-sea missile targeting the United States aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) during the ongoing regional conflict, according to statements reported by Iranian state media.
The claim was issued by commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, who said coastal missile batteries fired anti-ship missiles toward the American carrier operating in waters near the Gulf region.
Iranian officials said the launch formed part of a broader retaliatory campaign against United States and Israeli military operations carried out against Iranian targets earlier in the confrontation.
According to Iranian media reports, several missiles were fired from coastal positions controlled by the Revolutionary Guards, with the intended target being the American carrier strike group deployed in the region.
Iranian authorities said the carrier was operating hundreds of kilometres from Iran’s southern coastline when the missiles were launched from shore-based systems positioned along the Gulf.
However, United States military officials rejected Iran’s claim that the aircraft carrier had been hit during the attack.
Officials from United States Central Command said the missiles launched by Iran did not strike the vessel and did not come close to the carrier.
The U.S. military said the carrier continued normal operations following the incident and remained actively conducting flight operations as part of ongoing missions in the region.
Photographs released by the U.S. Navy after the incident showed aircraft operating from the carrier’s deck, which officials said demonstrated the ship had not been damaged.
Military analysts say the competing narratives reflect the information battle surrounding the wider conflict between Iran, the United States and Israel.
The confrontation escalated after a series of strikes and retaliatory missile launches involving regional powers and allied forces across the Middle East.
The reported missile launch toward the carrier highlights the increasing risks to naval assets operating in the region as tensions continue to rise.
