Interior CS To Appear Before Senate Committee

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki will today appear before the Senate Adhoc Committee investigating the Shakahola deaths to speak on behalf of the officers who were on the ground at the time of the killings in the vast forest in Kilifi County.

This, according to Azimio senators led by Tana River senator Danson Mungatana raises red flags and is an insinuation that the government is trying to manipulate their investigations.

The committee on July 7th was set to interrogate the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Amin Mohamed, the officers who were on the ground including the County head of DCI, the County national intelligence boss, the county police commander, and the officer in charge of the police station where Shakahola falls.

However, according to news reports by Nation, the Interior CS in a letter to the Senate said he would speak on behalf of the big team despite already having his time with the committee.

The senators now say the move will hinder their investigations hence manipulating the outcome further noting that it is also not in line with article 125 of the constitution where parliament and its committees have the power to summon anybody for the purpose of giving more information.

The Azimio team proposed that they should let the invitees speak for themselves because the team is big.

Meanwhile, the fourth phase of the exhumation exercise kicked off on Monday where 12 more bodies were recovered which brings the total count to 350 since the investigations began into the Shakahola massacre.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Professor Kithure Kindiki says they expect more bodies from the 40 identified graves.
